We tend to make our own homemade pizzas so when the folks from California Pizza Kitchen asked us to try their new and re-imagined frozen pizzas, we were a little skeptical. We love to go to CPK to have pizza, so we decided to give the pizza a try.
They have a few flavors that sounded interesting to us. One was their BBQ chicken pizza. I've eaten it at their restaurant and enjoyed it, so that's the first pizza we tried.
The instructions were simple so we preheated the oven and removed the pizza from the packaging. We noticed that there was a nice amount of chicken on it, but unfortunately it must have shifted before it was frozen because much of it was in a lump in the middle and it was too frozen to move.
When the pizza was done we cut and tasted it. It had a nice smoky flavor we expected from BBQ chicken. The pizza was a little 'light on cheese', but I thought that this might not be the kind of pizza that should be cheese laden. Too much cheese would probably overpower the flavor of the chicken.
The crust was very thin and crispy. My husband enjoyed the crust, but I would have preferred it just a wee bit thicker.
The pizza baked quickly and we put it on for the least amount of time shown in the instructions. I think next time I'll try even less time because the pizza may have been a little over baked.
Although I almost never buy frozen pizzas, I have to say I would buy this again. It was not as good as one from the restaurant, but heck, the price is right (around $6-$7), it was quick, and it was tasty.
Watch for our review of the chipotle pizza coming soon.
