Scotland, 1760: The Campbells and MacGregors have fought for years. In the latest skirmish, Malcolm MacGregor’s mother Iona and sister Carleen have been kidnapped by a raiding party. Malcolm sets out to free his relatives from their captivity.
Desperate to rescue them, he kidnaps Campbell’s daughter, Lauren. He plans to trade Lauren for Iona and Carleen, only to learn that they have been sent to a port town to be sold into indentured servitude across the sea in the colonies of America. He hastens to the town only to learn that their ship has already sailed and he must follow them across the ocean if he hopes to reclaim them. With Lauren still in his company, he books their passages and continues his mission.
Jennifer Hudson Taylor’s historical romance “For Love or Loyalty” deals with family duty and the line between love and hate. The inspirational story traces MacGregor’s quest to find his family and obtain their freedom while he seeks to protect Lauren. As he questions his own motives in taking her and in continuing to hold her prisoner, he must weigh his obligation to his family against his Christian values and his actions. Lauren’s quiet example weighs on his conscience.
Taylor walks a tightrope of suspense, as MacGregor traces the trail of his mother and sister once they have been sold as servants and transported away from the town where their ship landed. As he crosses the countryside with Lauren, he finds himself drawn to the proud but compassionate young woman. Along the way, they find themselves alternately blessed and battered by the people they meet.
The story relates high adventure and gentle romance, brave heroism and shameful actions. Through it all, Taylor faces issues head on but with a Christian perspective. She presents issues of servitude and slavery, prostitution and drunkenness, lechery and dishonesty. “For Love or Loyalty” tells a great story, but may not be appropriate for younger teens, due to the issues.
Historical romance lovers will enjoy the interaction between Malcolm and Lauren and revel in the rich historic detail. Adventure fans will approve the globe-trotting excitement of the story. Christian readers can lose themselves in a story with a spiritual foundation that carries the key players through their trials.
As the first volumes of a projected series, “For Love or Loyalty” gets The MacGregor Legacy off to a fines start. Taylor’s readers will find themselves keeping watch for the next installment.
