Flying Yoga Shala Gives Oakland A Pair Of Wings

Still in its age of development, Flying Yoga Shala has redefined the meaning of 'yoga studio', and re-invented the scene of the bustling Temescal District of Oakland.

With over 30 class offerings a week, from traditional Hatha Flow to CampYoga, TRX Flight Camp and Zumba, the studio defies the traditional studio mold, giving to the variety of Temescal-goers a variety of heart-pumping-mind-blowing alternatives for total body and mind fitness, health, and well-being.

And if this isn't impressive enough; Flying Yoga Shala has only been serving clients since its grand opening May 22, 2010, and yet has earned a Bay List Award and been named winner of 'Best of the Bay' (to name a few of the accolades achieved by the budding bottega).

Founded by esteemed Yoga Instructor and local inspiration Laura Camp, the studio's appeal lies not only in its reviews, nor are the twinkling blues of the overhead lights solely resposible for the glory of this space; rather the heart and soul of Flying Yoga lies in every detail, crevice, and corner of the modest space.

Set between 44th and 43rd on a busy section of Telegraph, the outside of the studio is hardly what you'd imagine from the typically landscaped business of yoga. Aside from a simple pair of wings framing the small-type font words 'Flying Yoga', and the daily events chalkboard that lives amongst the sidewalk bicycle racks, the studio hardly screams for attention.

But upon entering through the single door a melange of energies rise to greet the senses, each flavor uniquely inspired by Flying Yoga's long list of talented teachers, students and crew. That is to say, the studio feels as soft and gentle as it does playful and energetic, depending on the time of day and style of class.

And, without memberships and thankfully lacking an overwhelming table of products and merchandise, Flying Yoga is a refreshing contrast to the larger breed yoga studio. True to the teachings of yoga, the beauty of Flying Yoga is subtle, its message of peace and play echoed in the oration of postures and poses, steps and sit-ups, displays of experience and words of wisdom.

Also at Flying Yoga are the occasional workshop and performance, just another way this local gem encourages community members to, (in the case of the circus performances), literally 'show their stuff'.

To Laura Camp, her husband Aaron Hale (renovator and carpenter extraordinaire, you can check the community board for the 'before and afters', whoa!), and all the teachers and crew: a job well done. Oakland and the world beyond is serviced by the endless heart that radiates from Flying Yoga.

For more information (check out the new student deal) and for class scheduling, you can visit Flying Yoga Shala online.

You can also contact Ryn Muat, studio manager, by emailing info@flyingyogashala.com, or calling 510.200.4612.

The best way to learn about the studio? Stop by! The front desk staff (appropriately labeled 'flight crew'), are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and studio doors remain open fifteen minutes before any one of the scheduled classes.
