If you’re a lover of all types of dance (Modern, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Interpretive etc.) then you need to be in the Moran Theater, at the Times Union Center for the Performing Arts this weekend. The show Flashdance – the Musical brought dance, drama and singing up close and personal.

Jennifer Beals may have introduced us to Flashdance the movie, butFlashdance – the Musicalintroduces new music from the incredible seven piece Flashdance – the Musical’s Orchestra along with some familiar tunes. The costumes, scenery and lighting are well worth mentioning and a credit to the presentation.

Unlike the original motion picture that used stunt people and other professional dancers, Jillian Mueller (Alex Owens) did all the dancing on the Times Union stage herself. Accompanied by a host of fine singers and dancers including Ryan Carlson (Break Dancer & Ensemble) from our own local Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, the dancing was spectacular. It’s amazing how all the dancers can gyrate and promenade so effortlessly across the platform yet are able to deliver their lines with precision and clarity.

The duets from Corey Mach (Nick Hurley) and Jillian Mueller (Alex) resounds the love that the two characters develop during the musical. Then there is DeQuina Moore (Kiki) who, besides giving great vocals on stage and has tremendous dance moves, adds much attitude to her character.

Do you recall the scene when all the water comes down on Alex from the ceiling when she perched herself on a chair (see the photo in the Slide Show)? Well, don’t worry about getting wet if your seats are close to the stage – the incredible scenic designs team has made the impossible, possible.

You still have time to get your tickets and sing along to familiar tunes such as “Maniac”, “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll”, “Gloria” and “What A Feeling”.

Flashdance: “If a dream comes true just one time – it can change your life for all times.”
