First impressions of Sound of Music live on NBC were mixed. The ensemble opened the show with amazing energy and nearly perfect pitch. When Carrie Underwood first appeared on screen audience members held their breath to wait and see how she would do. Her singing in the opening was fair, nothing remarkable, but the worst part was her acting. Carrie Underwood’s acting level is similar to that of a high school theater major that has dreams of making it big one day. Now saying this, we know Carrie Underwood does not have an acting background. That being said, her performance is fair for a very stressful live television event. If it were an actress or someone with more acting experience people would be much more upset with her fair performance.
Shortly after, Carrie Underwood beings “My Favorite Things” and begins to impress audiences with her voice. She performs this song with more natural emotion and her pitch it much better. This song showed us the Carrie Underwood we have watched since her days on American Idol years ago. Maybe it was her beginning to warm up to the stress of the event. Maybe she finally felt comfortable and opened up to audience, but only time will tell. At this point, we are only five or ten minutes into the live event and much more is still to come, three hours to be exact.
The sets upon first glance are amazing and detailed as they should be for such a popular musical and such a well-advertised live event. The orchestra is amazing, of course, and really helps keep the spirit and energy of the show alive and kicking.
Audiences are looking forward to meeting the Vontrapp family, especially the children. The children will make or break this live performance. Even if Carrie Underwood takes a turn for the worse, if the children are great it won’t matter. Looking forward to meeting them live with the rest of the viewers shortly.
