The self-titled EP from Filial is the first release from C.J. Bergmen's new project. It is reminiscent of Bon Iver or the more introspective songs by The National. Tight, connected, and conceptual this EP takes you on an amazing and emotional journey over 6 six songs. The stories told may be relational, spiritual, or even just internal in nature. No matter what it is captivating. Starting with a war cry of a first track the protagonist starts to feel the realities of battle by track 4. Track 5 (Pull Yourself Together) is perhaps the stand out track as he fights his loneliness and loss of hope by coaching himself to continue. The closing track swells back up as if trying to reenter the fray while both proclaiming and perhaps questioning "Isn't it beautiful". This is a spectacular EP. Can't wait for what's next.
