Before we get into the review of this DVD, in a strange coincidence the 'Costa Concordia' ran aground last night Friday January 13th. This was the cruise ship featured in this film.
Synopsis IMDb
A symphony in three movements. Things such as a Mediterranean cruise, numerous conversations, in numerous languages, between the passengers, almost all of whom are on holiday... Our Europe. At night, a sister and her younger brother have summoned their parents to appear before the court of their childhood. The children demand serious explanations of the themes of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Our humanities. Visits to six sites of true or false myths: Egypt, Palestine, Odessa, Hellas, Naples and Barcelona.
'Film Solcialisme' was directed by famed French-Swiss director Jean-Luc Godard. Godard and his contemporaries were part of a 'new wave' in filmmaking. Considered one of the most radical directors of the 60s and 70s, Godard challenged the conventional Hollywood films and started making films on his own.
French films are very much an acquired taste. 'Film Scialism' will appeal to those who are hardcore foreign film addicts. However, I found it uneven, difficult to understand and the sub-titles didn't seem to match the scenes.
My reaction to this film could be that my brain has been rotted since birth by American fluff, but it's what I know and what I like. A movie goer with a more exotic palate will probably enjoy this film very much.
'Film Socialisme' is now available on Standard and blu ray DVD. It is being distributed by 'Kino Lober', who has an amazing catalog of films.
I viewed the blu ray edition of this film. The special features are:
An essay about 'Film Socialisme' by Richard Brody, author of 'Everything is Cinema: The Working Life of Jean-Luc Godard. (Make sure to read this essay, it's very well written and interesting.)
Trailers
Still Gallery (These gallieries are one of my favorite parts of blu ray DVDs)
The film can be purchased on Amazon.
Stay tuned to this column, I have several Kino Lober films to review. Many of KL films are classic and will be on my 'Golden Age of Hollywood Column'.
