Runner Runner might be one of the worst movies to hit theatres this fall. The script is so bad that the talented lead actors seem like they cannot act at all. Everything is rushed and leaves you with a feeling of indifference, rather than feeling satisfied that you spent hard-earned money to watch it.
The biggest problem with Runner Runner is its script. All the plot points in the film are hurried, starting with Ritchie (Justin Timberlake) getting hustled in online gambling. There's no setup for his downfall; it happens right off the bat. Then the supposedly talented investor instantly goes to Costa Rica to go head to head with the biggest name in the business. Right. Along with the quick pace of events, the writing leaves no room for the actors to develop characters. Ivan Block (Ben Affleck) is this villainous thief of a man, but there is no reason to be scared of him. His character never builds enough where you feel like he is an actual threat. Minus one scene with a group of crocodiles, he is just an average guy who runs a online poker company worth billions.
The script also makes Affleck's relationship to Gemma Arterton's character Rebecca extremely confusing. When they are introduced he is kissing her neck, but then she says that they are not together. However, he is extremely possessive of her and acts like they are a couple throughout the movie, getting outraged when she shows any interest in Ritchie. While it is understandable that he would be envious, Arterton and Affleck both act like they have a thing all the way to the end of the film.
While the ending of the the movie is predictable, the melodramatic final lines are enough to blow the whole movie. The final line is obviously stylized for dramatic effect, but comes off as goofy rather than powerful.
Runner Runner has such poor scriptwriting that it will be hard to get into the story. The acting really is not that great and the plot leaves you feeling like you just wasted an hour and a half of your time. With all the great movies releasing in the next few months, this is one you can skip and not feel guilty about.
