Before You Know It

Opening tonight at the Laemmle Music Hall and on June 20 at the Arena Cinema, festival documentary darling Before You Know It examines in intimate detail the lives of three LGBT seniors.

The doc follows Dennis, a kind-hearted widower in his 70’s who is only now after the death of his wife of 30 years, daring to explore his sexual identity and fondness for dressing in women’s clothes; Ty, a life-long activist who has to come to terms with the prospect of marrying his long-term partner now that marriage is legal in New York and Robert, a feisty Hawaiian shirt wearing owner of the longest running gay bar in Texas.

By becoming witness to these vibrant men’s lives the specific set of issues facing LGBT seniors comes into sharp focus. They are among the estimated 2.4 million lesbian, gay and bisexual Americans of the age of 55 who face heightened levels of discrimination, neglect and exclusion.

Make no mistake this is not a gloomy film filed with statistics and tragic stories. This is a film about a generation of trailblazing men who have experienced unbelievable change in their lifetimes. They came up in time before the Civil Rights movement and have witnessed the Stonewall riots, HIV/AIDS pandemic, the rise of Queer activism and the recent passing of gay marriage in many states.

Before You Know It is an affirmation of life told with humor and candor.
