Syrah is one of my favorite wines, with a rich, full body, and a fairly broad expression of flavors and pairing profiles. This wine is grown in the Arroyo Seco AVA, in the Arroyo Seco Canyon Vineyard, about 20 miles East of Big Sur, California. Figge sources grapes from 1 of the 60 acres of this vineyard. The wine is a rich purple-red color, with aromas of chocolate, dark berries, licorice, faint herbal notes, a hint of pepper and a bit of alcohol. On the palate, it has a lighter body than one expects from a Syrah, but delivers a rich mouthfeel, with black raspberries, cherries, plums, a little smoke, and some licorice. The tannins are not overwhelming, but they are there; I expect this wine will age well. I have tried the 2007 vintage; it is slightly more tannic, with a touch more body, but young.
This Syrah paired well with braised short ribs, and should work nicely with most meats, milk chocolate, and possibly grilled salmon.
Locally, it is available at Gulf Wines Merchants, located at 1836 SW 3rd Ave, in Miami. Their phone number is (305) 854-4646; other locations can be found by e-mailing jane@uuwines.com.
