The movie is about how the website Wikileaks was created and how it came to be.
The movie starts with Daniel (Bruhl) in his apartment trying to get a hold of Julian (Cumberbatch). Three major websites are working together to put up a major leak all at once.
Flash to 2 years earlier.
Daniel is at work and gets into a fight with his boss. On the way out, he impresses a coworker, Anke (Vikander).
Daniel meets with Julian at a conference as they struggle to get people to show up. Afterwards, they start working on the leaks that they have. Julian puts it under the impression that they have a lot of workers but then Daniel learns it’s just the two of them.
Daniel puts his efforts fully in, which causes him to lose his job and his girlfriend.
The more that Daniel works with Julian on this site, the more he sees that there’s more to him and that there is nothing that he won’t do for the website. But when he realizes this, he might be too late to stop him.
This is one of those movies that is filled with drama and conspiracy, which seems to be a trend right now, following the success of The Social Network and Zero Dark Thirty. While the back story for this one is not as intense as the other two, it is still an interesting story.
The creator Julian certainly did have a darker and deeper background then what is seen on the surface but like pretty much every other partnership, there is tension and fighting amongst the two main workers.
There were times that it felt a lot like The Social Network, especially when Daniel and Julian started arguing. I was getting flashes of The Social Network movie and it kind of took me out of it a little bit.
While the story line was very interesting, there was times when it ran a bit slow. They could have either cut it out or could have done flashes or something to speed up time. We didn’t need to see every single big leak that they did. I think if they would have done maybe 2 or 3 it would have been more effective.
Overall, I thought it was an interesting enough movie, but not one that I would probably see again. It might be worth waiting to get it on DVD if you like conspiracy and drama filled movies.
