As if authoring a plethora of best-selling non-fiction books wasn’t enough, Dr. James Dobson is now writing fiction. His debut novel, Fatherless, co-authored with Kurt Bruner, is the first in a trilogy.
Fatherless is a brilliantly crafted dystopian thriller. And it’s positively scary. Not spooky-scary, but alarming-scary because if present trends continue, the future world portrayed in Fatherless just could come about.
Taking place several decades in the future in 2042, Fatherless brings the reader to a place where human life is evaluated in terms of economic worth. People are ultimately either contributing to society or costing society. They are either useful commodities or debits.
Fatherless is character-driven with believable characters including the beautiful Julia Davidson, an award-winning journalist trying to revive a waning career, and Kevin Tolbert, a conservative congressman. These protagonists provide insight into the convoluted and intertwining worlds of politics and media.
The plot is reminiscent of a futuristic 1984 or Brave New World (and the more recently applauded Hunger Games).
The outcome of the dystopia portrayed in Fatherless is shocking. The book whets your appetite for the follow-up books in the series, coming soon: Childless and Godless.
