Get on board for a hilarity laden emotionally driven roller coaster ride of utterly unexpected love between a handsome and successful young businessman and his new found friend, a plus sized printed word specialist. Their lives are shaken as their relationship unexpectedly and rapidly grows and a real bond of love forms between them, but the challenges are many and strong and the end is not joyous but rather inevitable. This is the essence of the Neil LaBute play “Fat Pig” currently at the Hudson Mainstage Theatre in Hollywood’s Theatre Row.
But it is the ride far more than the destination that determines the quality of anything in life and the quality of this production is absolutely stellar. Brilliantly directed by Alexis Jacknow and truly starring four of the finest actors on stage anywhere.
Jonathan Bray is “Tom” the yuppie who falls for the fat chick with the huge heart and quick wit. In addition to his abundant stage work you may have seen Jonathan on TV in “House of Lies,” “Man Up” and “Perception.” His portrayal of “Tom” in “Fat Pig” is brilliant and flawless. My point is simply that to yield a great show you must start with a great property. “Fat Pig” from award winning playwright Neil LaBute is such a property. You then need top direction and a superb cast. The current production of “Fat Pig” at the Hudson Mainstage Theatre has it all. The story is rich and compelling and laced with enough humor to keep the audience laughing. The principal cast of four represents the very best in the business and are an absolute joy to watch. NYU graduate Alexis Jacknow is a well known and widely accomplished Director who stepped up to plate in this production of “Fat Pig” and hit a homerun.
