With the death of star Paul Walker still fresh in our minds and in our hearts, it seems only fitting to celebrate one of his most recent films and how much pure entertainment he brought to millions of fans across the globe. "Fast & Furious 6" is a full throttle masterpiece that rounds up a sprawling and epic story that none of us truly expected
We find our heroes, several months after the events of the fifth film as Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) asks Dom (Vin Diesel) and Brian (Paul Walker) to help him take down an organization of lethally skilled mercenary drivers lead by a dangerous mercenary and an old friend from their past. In return, their crew will receive full pardons and be allowed to return home as they try to take down their deadliest score to date.
With this sixth installment, "Fast & Furious 6" this franchise cements itself as an insanely gonzo and fun action franchise that ties back into itself in such a simplistic way that it is actually kind of brilliant. Each time director Justin Lin sits behind the wheel, these films get bigger and bolder and he takes us through this universe at a break neck speed. On this film, Lin truly goes for it from an action standpoint as the stunts and the action are executed at such a blistering pace that you can't help but rest on the edge of your seat for the entire running time of the film, it is simply some big time action sequence staging that puts people like Michael Bay and JJ Abrams on notice. The script from writer Chris Morgan who has worked on parts 3-5 before this, comes back around in such a way that this gonzo action franchise about big cars and sexy people not only has heart as these characters deal with the real world consequences of their actions but also it a real masterstroke in storytelling as some elements of parts 3-5 that were a little unsatisfying are now at least somewhat resolved. It rewards the hardcore fans of the franchise, while welcoming new one's all at the same time, exactly what a film like this is supposed to do. With the over the top, somewhat insane nature of the action that still balances some real emotional stakes you need an ensemble cast that knows exactly what they are getting into.
Vin Diesel & Paul Walker are Dom & Brian at this point at they lead their family throughout these adventures making for some solid leading men and stoic heroes. Dwayne Johnson simply has far too much fun as Hobbs and gets to chew the scenery even more so then he did in the recent G.I. Joe film, it's no surprise that this character is getting his own spin off film. Tyrese Gibson and Chris "Ludacris" Bridges have fine tuned their comedic timing providing some fantastic tension relieving moments, while the returning Michelle Rodriguez does close the loop on these characters adventures to a certain extent. Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Jordana Brewster and Elsa Pataky all return while adding Luke Evans and Gina Carano just make this a kinetic, over the top thrill ride that you'll never want to get down from, with an end credits cameo that will get you pumped for the upcoming Part 7.
Picture and sound quality on the Blu-Ray are first rate and the special features include an extended version of the film, behind the scenes featurettes, a making of look at the film, deleted scenes, a set tour with Vin Diesel and a feature length commentary track with director Justin Lin.
At the end of the day, "Fast & Furious 6" is the kind of film that will get dismissed as simply dumb popcorn filmmaking. However in reality, it is storytelling of the highest order that can loop in new viewers, satisfy old ones and make entire audiences scream in glee over the simple pleasures of going "Fast".
5 out of 5 stars.
