Now this is how you do DLC. Sure, under the hood Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon may be all but identical to its pre-colon namesake, but if this stand-alone expansion proves anything it’s that a fresh coat of paint can make for a completely different experience. There’s a definite focus on delivering more of the open-ended garrison missions that helped to make its predecessor so popular, but more than anything it’s the achingly heavy ‘80s motif that steals the show here. Blood Dragon isn’t so much a love letter to the ‘80s as it is a desperate letter to the decade containing its lopped-off ear, not a second passing without at least some minute detail calling back to the media of the time, and you know what? That’s perfectly fine. If you’re going to overhaul a game’s image why not go all-out? There’s more than enough room in the industry for a game where a barely-veiled cyborg Michael Biehn bears quasi-futuristic weaponry against endless waves of robot henchmen and neon plasma-spewing dinosaurs while spouting one-liners, room for many more if you ask me. In the words of a much greater Internet personality than I, “Oh yeah, hell yeah, it’s a goddamned dinosaur laser fight.
