Animator, producer and, now, crooner, Seth MacFarlane, celebrated the release of his debut album, Music Is Better Than Words with a sold out performance at the Highline Ballroom, located in Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking district, on December 21, 2011. Accompanied by American Dad! composer Joel McNeely, who also produced the album, MacFarlane and band offer a Sinatra-esque collection of traditional American standards in their Grammy nominated release.
MacFarlane’s vocals flow effortlessly and impeccably suit these 1950s era standards. The engaging 90-minute set featured selections from his recently-released album. The title track, “Music is Better than Words,” opened the show and set the mood as concert-goers settled in for an evening with one of the most talented men on television. His rendition of Sinatra’s renowned, “The Way You Look Tonight,” emerged as a highlight and a fitting tribute to one of the ‘founding fathers’ of American big band music.
The Family Guy creator additionally proved to be a good sport as his velvety vocal interpretations were occasionally interrupted by audience members who ardently exchanged witty retorts and banter with MacFarlane, which he jovially obliged.
McNeely and MacFarlane finished the show with a nod to Family Guy, performing “Shipoopi” from the musical, The Music Man, a la Peter Griffin. For the encore, MacFarlane revisited the stage to perform a rendition of “FCC Song,” highlighting his voicing of characters Peter, Brian and Stewie from the series.
MacFarlane and McNeely stage a stellar show; reminiscent of days gone-by. Evident enthusiasm and affection for big band compositions shine in their respective performances. Overall, these gifted entertainers present jubilant renditions of classic American music presented in an unpretentious, playful manner. The show ended with a standing ovation befitting a delightful evening of song and jest.
