Family Beach Vacations at 'Tween Waters Inn (Photos)

Ready for a beach vacation to beautiful Captiva Island? For families and couples alike, ‘Tween Waters Inn Island Resort is an ideal escape. Located on Florida’s southwest coast, Captiva is a sister island to Sanibel, both barrier islands, and renowned for their seashell-laden beaches and laidback, upscale lifestyle. ‘Tween Waters Inn is nestled right between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pine Island Sound, so you get a vacation filled with recreational opportunities that are as unique as the Inn itself.

Rich in History

In the early 1920s, Fishermen frequented this area for its variety of species – and the location of the property just couldn’t be beat. The fishermen began building cottages on these waterfront acres for easier access, and in 1931, F. Bowman and Grace B. Price started the ‘Tween Waters Inn. Word soon spread of this waterfront paradise and some very famous guests soon appeared, including former President Theodore Roosevelt, who loved deep sea fishing in these splendidly abundant Gulf waters; Pulitzer-Prize winning cartoonist J.N. “Ding” Darling (who the nearby National Wildlife Refuge is named after); Charles Lindbergh the aviator; and Charles’ wife, Anne Morrow Lindbergh, who wrote the book, “Gift from the Sea” (1955) while staying here as she was creatively inspired by the stretches of beach, the seashells and the wildlife.

In 2011, ‘Tween Waters Inn was officially listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Accommodation Choices

Families and couples have many options for accommodations at ‘Tween Waters Inn. There are 137 on the entire property, including 19 cottages with different themes, one-, two- and three-bedroom suites, as well as hotel rooms with contemporary décor and comfortable efficiencies. The multi-bedroom suites include either full kitchen or kitchen facilities and a separate living area.

Recreational Fun

With one of the top rated beaches in the entire country across the road, and a marina onsite, you can do it all at 'Tween Waters Inn. Bask in the sun, frolic in the waves, hunt for over 400 species of seashells, rent a boat, fish with a guide, take a shelling charter, rent a kayak or a stand-up paddleboard...you get the idea. And, in season, your odds are good that you will see manatees right from the dock. Plus, keep an eye out for bald eagles, ospreys, raccoons, river otters and roseate spoonbills. Sunset dolphin cruises are a great way to spy these adored creatures and witness a famous Captiva sunset.

Dining

You have several dining choices onsite so you needn’t ever leave the grounds. The Oasis Pool Bar features a nice variety of casual meals from sandwiches with Boar’s Head meats and cheeses to salads. The fresh grouper sandwich is always a winner. Dine beneath the pool umbrellas, at the poolside bar, or take it back to your comfortable room.

For dinner, try the Crow’s Nest (happy hour is fun and happening as are the Crab Races each Monday and Thursday night). For a real treat, don't miss the romantic, Old Captiva House, rated the Number One restaurant on Captiva by the readers of TripAdvisor.

With inside or patio dining – and killer sunset views, this place is magic. Executive Chef Jason Miller has a gift for blending flavors and he's known for utilizing fresh, local ingredients from the land and sea. Lobster Ravioli with tarragon and sherry lobster mornay is a fan favorite. Island Snapper “Wrap” is a delicate filet of snapper wrapped in oh-so-flaky phyllo pastry with asparagus spears, shitake mushrooms and roasted red peppers. It’s then elegantly placed atop goat cheese polenta and drizzled with aged balsamic. Sigh. And as romantic as it is, it is also well suited for families. There is a kids’ menu that features everything from a simple burger to filet mignon.

Just added to their exceptional lineup is sushi, tapas and martinis on the Garden Patio each Wednesday and Friday night from 6 pm to 9 pm. Bonus: Old Captiva House is now open for lunch and they offer an all-you-can-eat continental breakfast buffet.
