FALL FINALE WATCH: Psych participates in Neil Simon's Lover's Retreat

*** Psych  airs on the USA Network which is on Channel 5 on Columbus Insight Communications and Channel 29 for Columbus Time Warner Customers ****

Wow. Sorry for the delay in this.  I've been wanting to discuss this for a while but alas, things got hetic for the release of my little podcast's Christmas Show... so where did I want to begin? Oh yes.

If a show was to go out with a nice little mid-season bang, it would have to be the USA Network show that has hit it’s moment of zen for the majority of this season, USA’s Psych, which it’s mid-season finale was entitled Neil Simon’s Lover’s Retreat, where Shawn (James Roday) and Jules (Maggie Lawson) go to a retreat for the weekend.

Interestingly enough; It seemingly is the first time Shawn or Gus (Dulé Hill) have been purposely away from each other on purpose due to a woman, and both seem eerily concerned.  It’s quite hilarious, as a fan of the show, to get a glimpse into both sides of the coin. Shawn and Juliet, which rarely gets a moment to breathe, especially since they became a couple, really gets a moment to shine.

I’m not sure writing wise, what the delay was, (re: Shawn and Juliet in an almost stand-alone ep) but this was a great episode to leave us with, as while I feel the season has been the best the show’s been, really seemingly hitting what they were aiming at starting back a few seasons with the Ying/Yang killers (i.e. more serious storytelling but keeping it confined to the Psych-world and landscape with out rocking the boat).  But since last season, pairing the two together had yielded some almost frustrating Futurama Fry/Leela like behavior from the writers. Were they together? They seem to put it on the back burner.  This season, every relationship has been brought to the forefront, and re-examined.

Also interestingly enough; while we really see Shawn and Jules work together as a team by themselves for the majority of the episode and really play on the wonderful chemistry the real life couple of Lawson and Roday have, we also get to ham it up with the rest of the supporting cast, by pairing up Henry(Corbin Bernsen), Gus and Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) up to great comedic effect.

The show also featured a boat-load of guest stars, which was great. Overall, a solid episode, and honestly, I’ve never been more thrilled with Psych as a whole. It’s rare that a show this far in really finds it’s footing this well.  Sincerely, this has been one of the best seasons of the show yet, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the season will bring starting in February of 2012.
