What do you get when you combine a bevy of sexy Italian heart throbs, iconic Hollywood movies, and the gastronomic creativity and skill of Chef Carlo Valenziano? None other than the “A Taste of Big Screen" which is a culinary adventure you don't want to miss. This avant-garde food find is available from now until August 25, 2013 at Jo Jo which is the ultra-trendy Italian restaurant located in the lobby of the iconic St. Regis Bangkok.
Available for lunch and dinner, you can experience a menu of dishes that were featured in popular movies such as “Rocky” and “Donny Brasco” and are linked to the regional cuisine of popular movie stars of Italian descent such as Sylvester Stallone and Al Pacino. The playful “film” theme is featured prominently throughout the venue as you are greeted with a walk down a red carpet upon entering and beckoned by a continuous loop of clips from the Hollywood blockbusters featured on the menu. Guests who come dressed as a Hollywood character will receive a complimentary special treat as an added bonus.
Half the fun is in the ordering of the playfully named cuisine, and discovering the surprising Italian heritage of the Hollywood star you know and love. Start off with a James Bond Vesper Martini inspired by Gabriele Ferzetti who hails from Milan. It’s a formidable cocktail of gin, vodka, vermouth and fresh lemon peel that is “Shaken, not stirred”. For an appetizer try the “Rocky Balboa” of Fresh Figs, Apulia Capocollo Ham, and Burrata Cheese inspired by Sylvester Stallone along with a delightful glass of red wine such as the Langhe Rosso DOC Batasiolo, 2010. For something light try the “Forrest Gump” Peach & Prawn Cocktail w/ Baby Spinach & Saffron inspired by Gary Sinise of Sardinia and the “Hangover” of Wild Oyster Neapolitan w/ Fresh Basil Dressing & D.O.P. Costiera Lemon. The oysters in particular are a sensual and succulent delight much like Bradley Cooper who inspired the dish and it is amazing when paired with a light and floral white wine such as the Gewurtztraminer Alois Lagerder Alto Adige, 2011. For pasta opt for the spicy Robert De Niro inspired “Goodfellas” Cavatelli Pasta Molise Style w/ Pork Spare Ribs, Garlic, Chili, Tomato & Capers. It’s comfort food in a bowl. For main courses go for either the “City of Angels” Basilicata Lamb Shank w/ Crispy Corn Frascatula inspired by Nicholas Cage or the Coq Au Vin which is inspired by Al Pacino from the movie Donnie Brasco. The lamb is slow cooked so that it is so tender it falls off the bone, and the free range chicken in the pinot noir sauce in the coq au vin has a rich depth of flavor. Either dish goes well with a bold Italian red wine such as the Il Bruciatto DOC Bolgheri, 2010 from Tuscany.
This is fun, sophisticated and tailor made for diners who want to experience an unforgettable evening. Where else can you order a “Bradley Cooper” and an “Al Pacino” with a straight face and wash it all back with a few “James Bonds”? The uncompromising quality of the cuisine is undeniable, the wine list is superior and the service; as always, is impeccable. This limited time event is one of Bangkok's hottest tickets, and you should be sure to call ahead and reserve your spot so that you don't miss out.
