In her book Extravagant Grace Barbara R Duguid draws on the writings of John Newton along with her own experiences as a counselor and pastor’s wife along with her own personal struggles to teach us God’s purposes for the sins in our lives. She explores the various stages of Christian growth, various views on sin and points us to the Christ and his purpose for our lives.
This is a book that every Christian should read! So often it seems Christians avoid talking about their struggles with sin or gloss over them as much as possible without getting to the heart of the matter. Duguid is not afraid to look sin straight in the face for what it truly is and helps us along the way.
I saw a lot of myself here and my own struggles with sin. But many of the situations and topics Duguid addresses I have never heard anyone talk about so directly if at all. There are several areas where I have often felt like I was the only one who struggled with, and I was glad to know I am not alone! I am sure you will feel the same way. The reflection questions at the end of each chapter helped me look even further into my own heart.
Like most people I have heard of John Newton, the writer of “Amazing Grace”, and know his story being a slave trader whose life changed when he turned his life over to Christ. What I did not know was how much he wrote on the topic of sin, and while I had some idea of his struggles from hearing his story, I had no idea of the extent of it. Every Christian can learn from his story and be encouraged by his writings.
On the whole this is a powerful book! I highly recommend it for an accountability group or a Bible study who wants to take a deeper look into the topic of sin. I give it five out of five stars.
