David Newman has enjoyed a varied and fruitful career as a film composer, having worked on over one hundred credited films since delivering his early score for the classic 1986 horror flick Critters. The talented and versatile musician has composed scores for cult classics Heathers (1988) and further horror fare with The Kindred (1987), yet Newman's original score to the classic 1989 comedy Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure has remained unreleased...until now!

Granted, the Stephen Herek directed picture-which details the time traveling journey of two heavy metal buds in search of the ultimate final exam-did receive a soundtrack release of hair metal songs from the film (including Extreme, Tora Tora and Shark Island) yet this Intrada reissue marks the world premier of David Newman's collection of incidental music and fanfares, all taken from the original DAT and 1/2 " master tapes, previously thought to be lost.

This original score to Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure does a great job a matching its musical motifs to the characters in the film, with Wild West themes ("Brawl and Ancient Greece," "Saloon Track Piano") accompanying the appearance of Billy the Kid and rousing orchestral bombast ("Execute Them!" "Meet the Princesses") as our titular duo attempt to escape a vengeful king and the threat of torture from the "Iron Maiden" while lost in medieval times.

Newman conducts the orchestra here, while also employing guitar and synthesizer elements for the more modern, sci-fi oriented cues ("Thank You San Dimas High," "Wild Speech Montage," "Jailbreak") which will likely strike a stronger chord for those who grew up with this film as kids or teenagers. These cues are kept tight and short for the most part, yet it's the combination of these kinetic musical bursts and the more subtle string selections which keep Newman's full score flowing as an enjoyable, cohesive effort.

Indeed, this one should be a no-brainer for Bill and Ted fans, with both the soundtrack and Newman's original score serving as fine musical companion pieces to this classic comedy and a most excellent trip back in time to 80s nostalgia.
