Bianchi's Hilltop Restaurant & Lounge (2820 Hubbell Avenue in Des Moines) has been around for more than fifty years now. That kind of longevity does not come easy in Des Moines, and only a few other area restaurants can make that boast. Hilltop's formula for success has been a combination of great service, reasonable prices, and exceptional food.
Bianchi's Hilltop Restaurant & Lounge is one of the few restaurants in the Metro that never seems to be understaffed. Even when the dining areas are completely filled, one can look out over the room and see a number of bustling staff members taking orders, delivering food, busing tables, and checking on customers. There is always someone nearby when you need them, and the staff is friendly and attentive.
Bianchi's menu is a blend of American and Italian favorites: steaks, chicken, ribs, seafood, pastas, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, and salads. Entrée prices range from $4 to $18, making dinners very affordable. Dessert prices were about the lowest I have seen in Des Moines, ranging from $2 to $3. Stand-out dishes during my visits included a spicy Baked Pepper Steak Casserole ($11.75), a flavorful Prime Rib daily special ($18), and large, juicy, breaded Portobello Strips ($5). From Butter Fried Chicken Livers to Frog Legs and Rainbow Trout to Graziano's Italian Sausage Patty Sandwiches (single or double), the menu has an interesting variety of dishes.
Overall, my visits to Bianchi's Hilltop were all positive ones. However, there were a few small things that could be improved upon. The restaurant's Steak Fries were huge and flavorful; however, they were so thick-cut that not all of the fries cooked properly on two separate occasions. Also, a few of the restaurant's booths were in dire need of repair. I could tell that they only used those booths when the rest of the dining room was full, but they did still use them. That said, I would recommend Hilltop to anyone looking for a nice, affordable dinner for the whole family.
