Poor Nellie Sue, the cowgirl star of the many "Every Cowgirl..." books by Rebecca Janni. In this book she is starting a new school year, and is she ever excited. But the day does not start well -- her best friend, Anna, is sitting next to a new girl, Maya, on the bus.
The day continues to go downhill. Her desk is in a corner, far from Anna and Maya's desks. Maya squeezes between Anna and Nellie Sue, and accidentally trips Nellie Sue.
The worst is when Maya draws a picture of Nellie Sue as a cow. The whole class starts laughing at Nellie Sue, and she runs away humiliated. She says, "This brand-new day was NOT going my way!"
What happens next is unexpected and wonderful.
Misunderstandings happen, and this story illustrates how hard it can be to be the new girl, but also how difficult it can be to welcome new girls into a group of friends. This is a great read-aloud for talking about misunderstandings and how important it is to communicate when feelings are hurt. That works much better than getting angry.
The illustrations by Lynne Avril deserve a mention because of the use of bright colors and simple line drawings. Some of the illustrations are surrounded by a lariat. What could be more perfect for a book about a cowgirl?
