Of the few good concerts Lawrence party people have missed out on, Euforquestra's show last night was among the best. The funky seven-piece group from Fort Collins, Colorado, played their hearts out for a small, but grateful crowd at the Bottleneck. The show was opened by The Brent Berry Band, a lively folk group that showed a lot of love to a small group of listeners.
For Euforquestra's set, the guys played songs back-to-back, blending reggae sounds with funk and afro-beat styles. Combining a full drum set with bongos and other percussion, the band set an energetic beat to every tune. Smooth, spunky bass lines and face-melting guitar solos complimented alto and tenor saxophone. The harmonized vocals of the various band members drew every member of the audience out onto the dance floor, where folks got funky to the beats and listened in rapture to every song.
Between their own original hits and funky classics like "Get Up Offa That Thing," the guys showed the Bottleneck a funky good time. If only there had been a decent crowd. At its height the dance floor had less than thirty people. The dancers got down to every song, with plenty of room to dance, but the band deserved better. Where was everyone?
Dirty Business stole the crowd, at Fatso's, with a electronic dance party the likes of which the small venue rarely sees. Turning Thursday night into a drunken dance-fest, the combined powers of Trevor Stout, Mark Hill and Adam Pingleton made for a drum-driven, bass-tastic electronic show that drew in a massive crowd and held them on the dance floor all night.
The party was the finale for Dirty Business, at least for the next few months. For their last show they raged on until the bar asked them to stop. The crowd was still getting down until the last note, craving more as the bar closed down. Dirty Business may be taking a long break, but they are certainly welcome back anytime.
