Galinn by Kiera Thomas is touted as an erotic horror, ménage, and paranormal type book. Here is the book blurb:
Sexy overweight Leoma is hunted down by a thirst to kill, soul stilling, mate craving Alp creature from the forbidden world. But the way the Queen of the forbidden world takes care of her problem Alp will be to send her three immortal human warriors-Galinn, Kallisto and Alexios after the heart of the Alp and bring it back to the forbidden world.
The three warriors, while hunting the Alp, decide to risk their immortality and not return to the forbidden world. But they need a plan, a plan that will risk their own lives from the Queen when she learns of their decision.
While hunting the Alp, Galinn falls in love with Leoma. Leoma is everything a woman should be to Galinn, soft, with rounded curves he can hold on to. Promising to protect her and find a way not to return to the Queen, she is captured by the Alp. The Alp hides her in a hidden cave in the mountains of Kentucky. Inserts the mating hormone inside her that could destroy her, could change her future with Galinn forever…
I want to start this review off by saying that I can usually forgive a few mistakes in a book, but with the level of atrocities in this book I can not over look them.
First off the spelling and grammar is out of control. I spotted blatant errors that I could not believe were let through to be published. And the tenses. In one sentence alone, it went from past to present and back again.
I have no problem with head hopping in a book, when there is a clear page break or in the next chapter. When every single character’s thoughts were in the story I wanted to scream. Actually I did scream. Several times in fact. Why? Within a paragraph, I had too many characters fighting for my attention. I screamed very loudly at this point.
And possibly the worst offense to me, as a reader were the characters. Each and every character that was introduced was flat and unappealing. I did not believe in any of them. They were not fully “fleshed” or fully developed. I was not invested in the main character. While I hated each and every one of the characters, Leoma has bit more of my hatred. She is possibly the dumbest heroine ever. How am I to believe that she fell in love with Galinn after a day? Even the sex scenes were flat and uninteresting.
There were also all these little anecdotes within the story that felt thrown in to try and flesh out the story, but they added nothing and took away more than anything.
The second offense was the telling. And I mean every single act was damn near told to me as a reader.
Then there were the repeated passages over and over. Example: The reader is told that there are worlds that exist side by side, but only a thin membrane separates the worlds. The only planet, the forbidden word, with their Queen, is the only one who knows this. This was repeated several times throughout. And yes I screamed after the second time.
I won’t lie, this book read like a high school first draft. There was just too many things wrong for me to enjoy it, and I love darn near everything. I also hate to give a bad review, but I have to also be truthful. I would suggest the author work harder on her next book and obtain a critique partner, or better yet, take her time to develop her characters more. This story had potential that was missed.
Bottom line you should pass on the book.
