Eric Johnson At The Mayne Stage: Review (Photos)

Guitar great Eric Johnson played a sold out show at the Mayne Stage Last night. What I like about the Mayne stage is its size and in the past year alone I’ve seen legends like John Mayall and Leon Russell play there. Eric Johnson opened the show with an acoustic set which also included him playing solo piano on a cover of “Wind Cries Mary” by Jimi Hendrix. Johnson is known for his guitar skills, but it also a great singer. For me his most recent album Up Close really shows that how well he can sing. His band was a trio who are both great musicians as well. In the 35 years since Johnson’s first album he has been called "one of the most respected guitarists on the planet" by Guitar Player magazine, his single “Cliffs Of The Dover” won a Grammy for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance,” and his album “Ah Via Musicom” went platinum. The only guitars Johnson played were his signature Martin MC-40 acoustic and his signature Fender Stratocaster. His set included “Desert Rose” “Fat Daddy” “When The Sun Meets The Sky”, and a double encore ending with his biggest song “Cliffs Of Dover.” EJ is always great to see live and constantly amazes the audiences everywhere he goes.
