Syfy’s supernatural drama Being Human returns with an all-new season. The show revolves around three roommates living in Boston who appear to be in their twenties as they try to live a normal life despite being a ghost, a vampire, and a werewolf. The series is a remake of the BBC show of the same name. With the original series first season only lasting 6 episodes, the American remake spun off into its own storylines creating its own take on these characters.
The first season introduces you to these characters and sets everything in motion to get their life on the path of supernatural insanity that makes up the core of the series. The cast all do great jobs with their characters and have great chemistry together. While there is a dark tone to the show, there is no shortage of humor to keep it light hearted at times either. For the idea behind the show it is surprisingly graphic and violent in some of the directions it heads into. The series is an ensemble, but feels like there is a bigger aspect to the vampire story than anything else. This makes sense given the whole vampire nation type culture and Sam Witwer is perfect in the role sucking up the screen like very few do as the tortured vampire Aidan. Sam Huntington has an innocence about him as well as an obvious case of suffering dealing with the growing werewolf inside of him showcasing a focus on this side of the lycan that fans are rarely given a glimpse of. The one character that just doesn’t seem like it would work, the ghost played by Meaghan Rath. Thanks to her playing easily the most tortured character in the series still manages to get the emotions across while adding a bit of cute humor to the overall relationship. As this first season progressed viewers are taking deeper into the inner struggles of these roommates and their unique living arrangements creating series that comes together really well.
There is no doubt why this series has such a huge following as it gives everything you need to create a great series, love, pain, vampires, werewolves, spirits, and betrayal. The cast is great and the writing has made this story one to stand up against other similar favorites like Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer and possibly even better. Entertainment One has brought the entire 13 episode second season to Blu-ray complete with high definition picture and sound, as well as making of featurettes, interviews, and Being Human at San Diego Comic Con 2012. This is a must have for any fan of the show, but if you’ve never seen it before then get out there and pick this set up, you will not be disappointed.
