Enjoy some Peace Love & the Beach

Being in the middle of summer as the weather heats up our jewelry usually disappears. Spending hours out in the sun and sand the diamonds and jewels usually get left behind for safe keeping. But, that’s no longer the case. We recently discovered PEACE LOVE BEACH by Elizabeth DeHart
when looking for great summer jewelry. It’s a collection of aluminum, waterproof, scratch resistant bracelets with adorable designs, fun geometry patterns and scenes inspired by nature that she created when living on the island of St. John in the US Virgin Island.

Q & A with Elizabeth De Hart

Q: Tell us about your inspiration to start the line.

A: There's a quote by Harun Yahya: "I always wondered why birds stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth. Then I ask myself the same question." I saw that quote after I had been offered the opportunity to go to St. John but while I was still a little too scared to pull the trigger. This was in 2012, when a lot of my friends were struggling to find work and make ends meet and yet I was considering leaving my steady job and comfortable life for an adventure on a tiny island in the Caribbean.

In the end, I thought of those birds and ultimately made the decision to go. I met a man named "G" during my first two weeks on island. I was sitting on a bench outside one of the island's few grocery stores when he came and sat next to me. We sat in silence for a few minutes before he turned to me and asked, "what's wrong with your wings, baby girl?" I looked at him quizzically and asked him what he meant. "St. John's only for broken birds," he replied. And over the next two years living on St. John, I really found that to be true.

The island attracts people who are looking to escape, who've been injured in some way by the "real world" and are searching for respite. The island of misfit toys, some call it. And St. John will heal you if you let it. That's what it did for me. Perhaps that is why I use a lot of birds on my bracelets, as a reminder to myself to fly simply because I can.

Q: What’s your favorite thing about having the line.

A: One of the things I really enjoy about making the bracelets is bending and shaping the metal by hand. I love working with aluminum because it's incredibly light which makes it easy to shape but also holds up so well with the abuse of the sun, sand, and sea. The first bracelet I ever made actually featured a photograph I had taken of one of the island's beaches. I made the bracelet for myself, and had been wearing it around the eco-resort I was working at the time when a guest asked where I had purchased it. I told her I had made it myself in my little tent cottage and she bought it then and there from me. That's pretty much how everything started with Peace Love Beach. It was difficult at first of course. Trying to get supplies shipped from the states, having my studio in a jungle tree house without walls, but I was so inspired by all the beauty of the island that I needed to express that creativity somehow and the bracelets were an amazing outlet for that. I would describe someone who wears a Peace Love Beach bracelet as free-spirited, light-hearted and adventurous.

Q: So what's next?

A: I'm not sure and I'm finally okay with saying that. I'll keep making bracelets, but maybe it'll be in Oklahoma or Bali or wherever else I happen to fly away to. Sometimes it's better to not know what's coming your way and just enjoying the unexpected chaos of it all.

We got a chance to sample the bracelets and were so excited to test them out. First off we were surprised at how lightweight and comfortable they are but, still very high quality. We wore them out for a few weeks in the ocean and pool and really put them up against the elements of sun, sand, sunblock and the most destructive of all….children. Wow! They really held up to the scratch resistant and we loved when we wore them to the beach they didn’t get hot in the sun and burn the skin. Finally, they are easily adjustable to fit any size wrist.

We really love these bracelets and think they are a great option for a gift for birthdays, mother’s day or the holidays. This is a great option to wear a little PEACE LOVE BEACH all year long.
