We dined at the new Chi Lin in West Hollywood last night and were wowed by the gorgeous room and the fantastic food. Chinese food hasn’t tasted this good since we last ate in Hong Kong. The dimly-lit, elegantly appointed room was filled by 8 p.m. with well-dressed diners who appeared to be savoring the food as much as we were.
The menu is designed for sharing and that we did, course after course of delicious dishes such as pan-fried chicken potstickers ($13), shrimp har gow and pork shu mai ($12), fresh kale with crispy shiitake mushroom salad ($12), braised black cod Kang style ($25), and Mongolian lamb ($22). There are many other choices from poultry to tofu and of course desserts.
Chi Lin was created by Los Angeles-based hospitality visionaries Innovative Dining Group (IDG) with cuisine inspired by Cecile Tang of JOSS, whose menu reflects his close ties to Hong Kong. In addition to the above, Tang’s signature dishes include the Maine Lobster Cantoness Xiong-Tong with ginger and scallion over house-made noodles; Hong Kong Pin Pei Chicken carved and served with hand-made porbien crêpes, plum sauce, and julienned cucumbers and scallions; Seared A-5 Japanese Wagyu New York served with chef’s special Xo sauce and coarse sea salt; and Leaves of Wild Yam in Lemon Zest, a superfood dark green leaves of wild yam lightly sautéed with ginger and garlic, sprinkled with lemon zest, and topped with honey glazed yam cubes.
The massive restaurant, designed by award-winning interior design firm Studio Collective , replicates the colors and tone of the Hong Kong skyline. There’s an inviting bar where we suggest having a pre-dinner there to get in the mood and get the appetite in gear. There’s also an open air patio for more casual fare and a nightly happy hour with discounts on food and drinks.
Chi Lin is located at 9201 Sunset Blvd., West Hollywood. It is open for dinner only. Street parking is difficult so it’s best to use the valet which costs $7.
