Love it or hate it, fall is pumpkin beer season. While some wait eagerly for these gourd-infused ales to hit liquor store shelves, others stick up their noses and disregard the style as nothing more than a fad. Whatever one’s opinion may be, it’s hard to ignore the multitudes of pumpkin beer that inundate the market come September. One such option is Emma’s Pumpkin Saison Ale (9.5% ABV) from TRiNiTY BREWiNG COMPANY.
Color: Emma’s is a clear, copper-orange beer with a beige head.
Aroma: A trace of brown sugar wafts past the nose as tell-tale scents of tartness lie in wait. There isn’t much in the way of pumpkin aroma—perhaps just a smidge.
Taste: As it is in the aroma, Pumpkin isn’t exactly the most upfront flavor in Emma’s. Instead, the beer is slightly sour but balanced with brown sugar and a touch of coriander spice. There’s an aftertaste not unlike molasses.
Mouthfeel: Somewhat light and wet, Emma’s also features a mild burn that can be attributed to the high alcohol content.
Emma’s may not be the pumpkin-lover’s first choice in beer but, for those who like dark, sour ales, it delivers with a few unique twists. One must believe that there is, indeed, pumpkin in Emma’s but one ought not to expect the drinking experience to be akin to a pumpkin pie thrown in one’s face.
Emma’s is available wherever TRiNiTY beer can be found.
