Fans of the WWE and their subsequent universe all across the city of Toronto are firmly ensconced on their couches as the ‘Road to Wrestlemania’ is in full swing with the biggest event of the year a little more a week away. At the "Elimination Chamber 2013", 6 brave souls who are all former world champions step into the chamber for the chance to headline Wrestlemania and take a shot at immortality. For the past decade on the often bumpy ‘Road to Wrestlemania’ the WWE Superstars from Raw & Smackdown have always had to travel through the unforgiving coliseum of the Elimination Chamber and this year was no different as six superstars play the odds for their 1 in 6 chance to go to Wrestlemania as champion.
With WrestleMania 29 on the horizon the last stop on the road to the biggest show of the year is the callous coliseum known as the Elimination Chamber. With the WrestleMania line up taking shape the WWE and World Heavyweight Champions face the most daunting challenge in any championship reign - outlasting five other competitors in a barbaric steel chamber for the right to carry the title into the show of shows for a chance at immortality. In one of the most unpredictable matches of the year two Superstars start in the middle of the ring and four pods open at random during the course of the match adding another Superstar to the fray. Who will have the iron will to emerge victorious? Plus several other rivalries begin to reach a boiling point as the entire Raw and SmackDown rosters aim to prove themselves worthy of the grandest stage.
As a continuation point of the return of the Rock, as he defends the WWE title for the first time in over a decade, this was very much a one match show but there was still some half decent action. The main event of The Rock vs. CM Punk had a few less nerves making for a solid match even though it lacked a little bit of the electricity of a month earlier at the "Royal Rumble". The destructive force known as The Shield went up against the immensely popular tag team of John Cena, Sheamus and Ryback in a 6 man tag match that was a barn burner with rights and lefts being thrown from bell to bell. The actual Elimination Chamber match to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship had enough moments as well, but outside of the main event it all felt a little sterile. The return of The Rock definitely has the entire locker room being very careful as to not take any risks leading up to the biggest event of the year. There certainly weren't any bad matches, but you could tell everyone involved wasn't necessarily in the moment but were instead thinking ahead since every result on this card felt fairly predictable.
Is "Elimination Chamber 2013" worth a look on DVD? Sure the action was decent, but when you spend close to 3 hours playing defense protecting your biggest event of the calendar year coming up, it may not feel like money well spent.
2 out of 5 stars.
