The Elephant Bar Restaurant, West Covina, California (CA)

On the 15th, the Elephant Bar Restaurant was running one of their periodic “Two for $20” promotions so while we were out running errands that sounded like a good excuse to return to the one in West Covina for dinner.

The West Covina Elephant Bar Restaurant uses themed dining to provide a relaxing atmosphere with delicious Pan Asian dishes like wok, fire-grilled and BBQ items.

Fresh brewed iced tea, $2.80

We arrived earlier than my normal so the hostess seated us right away. Shortly after, Amana came to take our drink orders. I was pleased to learn that they still have fresh brewed iced tea. She also explained our choices from the menu for the promotion. We could select one opener (appetizer) or one dessert plus two entrées.

Two for $20 Appetizer – Wok-Fired Chicken Lettuce Wraps

We liked their lettuce wraps the last time we went to the Elephant Bar Restaurant in La Mirada so decided to try them here in West Covina. They were delicious. The Elephant Bar’s version tossed stir-fried minced chicken breast, water chestnuts and roasted cashews and toasted coconut shavings together. They accompanied them with fresh Vera Cruz salsa and marinated cucumbers.

The one thing we wish they would change though is the iceberg lettuce that they use. Iceberg is just too stiff. One of our other favorite themed restaurants uses bib lettuce, which is much more flexible so it makes a better wrap that actually holds the filling instead of dropping it through the cracked leaf.

Their tamarind macadamia nut sauce was deliciously sweet. We both loved the flavor of these wraps.

Entrée 1 – Orange Peel Chicken

This dish is one of the Elephant Bar Restaurant’s Wok-Fired Specialties. They lightly batter the chicken then stir-fry in a zesty orange sauce with fresh orange peel. Dorothy was pleased that the batter really was thin. She liked the dish even though it was mildly hot. The other thing that delighted her was that her wok-fried vegetables were snow peas and broccolini. Dorothy chose white rice to go with this dish.

Entrée 2 – Korean Chicken and Kona BBQ Ribs

I ordered the Korean Chicken and Kona BBQ Ribs. They marinate the boneless chicken breast in their Korean BBQ sauce. The Kona BBQ Ribs are a signature wood-grilled dish. I got brown rice to go with this dish.

The ribs were fall off the bone tender. I enjoyed their Kona BBQ sauce which was mild and slightly sweet. The grilled chicken breast was a bit dry so I was grateful for the Korean BBQ sauce, which tasted like a teriyaki sauce. I also enjoyed the fact that the vegetables were grilled.

Hot Apple Blueberry Walnut Cobbler, $5.75

We decided to add the Hot Apple Blueberry Walnut Cobbler as dessert to our dinner. The Elephant Bar Restaurant serves this cobbler baked with blueberries and cinnamon-spiced apples topped with walnut butter streusel and vanilla ice cream. Dorothy prefers the ice cream on the side but humored me this time. It didn’t last long enough to be a problem as the cobbler had wonderful flavor and a nice mix of textures thanks to the streusel.

We found this restaurant very comfortable with a pleasant jungle themed décor. I enjoy their touches as well as their menu which makes dining there a bit exotic. We also appreciated Amana’s service. The portions were good sized too. Overall, it was a delightful experience.
