Can you imagine a grouchy, old, penny-pinching, geezer that resembles the Charles Dickens character Ebenezer Scrooge, living here in Jacksonville Florida? Oh, you have someone like that living in your neighborhood. Sorry! But if you can’t fabricate someone who could possibly exist like that, in this time and era, then you still have time to go to the Wilson Center for the Arts and see a great play entitled Eb Scrooge: A Southern Fried Carol.

Local playwright Ian Mairs has created fifteen plays, one of which is a modern, tantalizing twist of the traditional “A Christmas Carol”. The play is funny, witty and very well performed by a well-rounded diverse ethnic cast of over 27 adults and children. There’s singing, dancing and artistic genius from local students and actors, who hone their talents in fine arts. The scenery by designer Robert Rupp is well constructed and moved effortlessly by the cast across the stage of this ‘little theater’ play.

Some of the cast come on stage and begin to interact with the audience by trimming a tree and singing familiar Christmas carols. What a great ice-breaker and opening. Do you recall Mr. & Mrs. Fezziwig’s party? Then get ready to “Do the Hustle” and watch a Soul Train dance line. This group can really move and shake their groove thang.

Andrew Nance (Eb Scrooge), besides being a terrific actor, is an accomplished author who has fulfilled his goal of playing the crotchety Mr. Scrooge. You may recognize Brooks Anne Hayes Meierdierks (Bertha & Miss Dudenschlimmer); she has the best southern accent & down home drawl. Ms Meierdierks has recently appeared at the Alhambra Theater & Dining in “The Dixie Swim Club”. Meagan Inman (Ghost of Future) doesn’t say much, but has an amazing stage presence. Josh Johnson (Pizza Kid) is on his way as a professional singer/dancer/actor if he so desires to continue in an artsy venue.

The cast was unavailable on the first night, but you may have an opportunity to meet them, up close and personal, during the weekend shows. There are five more shows that you can attend. Don’t miss it!
