No true music lover can resist the riveting sights and sounds of Earth Wind & Fire. After 40 years, America’s seventh top-selling group of all time is still going strong as evidenced by their three recently sold-out concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA. Accompanied by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra under the baton of Thomas Wilkins, EWF’s famously alluring melodies, great grooves, and irresistible soul-funk-fusion dance beats brought the house down for nearly two hours with musical pyrotechnics that rivaled the evening’s fireworks finale.
The awesome 12-piece band features three of EWF’s original band members (Philip Bailey, Verdine White and Ralph Johnson) who incite standing ovations whenever they take the stage. Lead vocalist Philip Bailey was absolutely amazing as he sang hit after hit including such favorites as “Reasons,” “That’s The Way of the World,” “Shining Star,” “Let’s Groove,” “I'll Write A Song,” “Keep Your Head To The Sky,” “Emotions,” “After The Love Has Gone,” “Fantasy,” and “September.” His astonishing, signature, falsetto brought several roaring and standing ovations in appreciation of his virtuosity. Verdine White’s bass logic was energetic, funky and celebratory. Ralph Johnson kept the vocals and percussion tight. The entire band was on fire, in sync with the orchestra, and mesmerizing as a complete vocal and instrumental ensemble. Tonight’s audience was also treated to several songs from EWF’s recent release on Legacy Recording, Now, Then and Forever.
During “September,” an exhilarating shower of colorful fireworks and a laser show enhanced the evening’s musical aura. The audience went wild and gave the group a standing ovation as they exited the stage. EWF returned with an encore and further exemplified their ongoing relevance and connection with 18,000 applauding fans. Their show was an unforgettable sight and sound odyssey through their amazing career of hit songs and further verified why Earth Wind & Fire has sold over 90 million records and continues to sell out concerts around the world.
