DVD review: You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger

Synopsis ~ Two couples discover the grass may not always be greener on the other side in Woody Allen’s breezy comedy on wry, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger. Hoping to relive the pleasures of youth, Alfie Shepridge (Anthony Hopkins) dumps his wife of 40 years (Gemma Jones) and pursues a young call girl (Lucy Punch). So when daughter Sally (Naomi Watts) develops a crush on her boss (Antonio Banderas) and husband Roy (Josh Brolin) becomes obsessed with the beauty (Freida Pinto) who lives across the way, the entire clan’s fantasies take on reality as their passions not only drive them out of their marriages, but out of their minds as well.

With its teeter-tottered slant on reality and that all too familiar Allen quirk, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger coasts by mainly on the almost obligatory audience affections of its unique director and cast, but ends up leaving viewers hard-pressed to find fresh ideas.
At its core, the cast far outshines the content and while a few sparse scenes bring back fond memories from some of Allen’s earlier summits, this struggling stranger only makes it about halfway up the mountain. No extras to speak of this go around – on either the DVD or Blu-Ray for that matter – which is a bit disappointing considering its considerable cast and assumed undertaking, so if you’re waiting for that elusive gag reel or fidgety  commentary you may be stiffed, stuck and out of luck.
So although Allen supplies plenty of vixens, venting and Viagra, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger may not leave you with the same benediction as its once entrancing prediction.
