DVD review: Three Stooges (2012): A moronic madcap return to yesteryear

The Three Stooges is a nostalgic, humorous recreation of the moronic misadventures of the classic trio of comedians of yesteryear. Its an entertaining throwback that induces a forgotten style of comedy to the modern generation of movie goers. The film seeks to re-introduce modern audiences to the slapstick style of comedy of days past and that defined the careers of the men who became know as the “The Three Stooges.” The film stars Sean Hayes (Hit and Run), Will Sasso (Moving Day), Chris Diamantopoulos (Wedding Daze), Jane Lynch (Paul), Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls), Kirby Heyborne (Scout Camp), Stephen Collins (Blood Diamond), and Sophia Vergara (New Year‘s Eve). The film was directed by The Farrelly Brothers (Dumb and Dumber).
The Three Stooges is a haphazard, zany recreation that returns three of the most beloved characters in cinematic history to the big screen. It’s an entertaining throwback that remains faithful to the essence of original performers as it looks and feels just like the old three stooges show just with a modern twist. Despite the amount of time in between this updating and the original shows, this film really looks and feels like the three stooges. If you know anything about the Stooges then you know that their adventures were filled with madcap escapades and physical comedy. The new film is no different. The latest version of the Stooges really thrusts the characters into the present day. One of the best aspects of this film is how the Farrelly brothers intertwines the Stooges madcap comedic approach to modern technology. The movie manages to filter in jokes about Facebook, I-Phones, and even reality television. Each have a “Stooges” take on them that makes for great humor. The movie is even told in the old episodic of the series.
The actors completely capture each of the characters that they are attempted to recreate. it’s the return of the mad cap moronic adventures that endeared the trio to movie lovers many generations ago. Each actor accurately recreates the actor that he plays masterfully. The Farrelly brothers did a great job at casting. The new trio of actors and most of the film is more than just a recreation but a testament that pays homage to the original Stooges. They look and sound just like the characters they have been cast to portray.
Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, and Chris Diamantopoulos do a masterful job at recreating the characters. Each actor really gets it and never loses anything. if you didn’t know better then you could actually believe that they are the originals.
The Three Stooges is a moronic comedy with a great deal of heart. It truly captures the essence of the show of yesteryear. It’s a decent comedy that will entertain. The style of comedy of the film is a little dated and may not translate well into the modern era of movie making. However, It will give a high level of entertainment to those who used to enjoy the show. I don’t know what to tell you but I really think everyone’s expectations for this film was far too high. The film isn’t the greatest story but the stories of the original ’Stooges” weren’t either. Its not a great comedy but it really the actors do a great job at recreating the “Stooges” style of humor and that alone makes the film worth watching. While it has been bashed, it isn’t awful. It’s a very good throwback that will evoke a great deal of nostalgia. This a family friendly comedy that definitely makes for good humor.
