DVD review: The Woman

Synopsis ~ A domineering, upper-middle class father abducts a feral woman while out on a day-long hunting trip.  With his twisted set of ideals, he decides to embark upon a deranged project – to "civilize" her – a decision that he and his family will soon regret.  Tearing apart the image of the all-American family, director Lucky McKee and writer Jack Ketchum unleash a savage depiction of the war of the sexes and nature versus civilization.  Labeled one of the most controversial films of the year, The Woman is a must for all fans of horror.

What could easily be described as a far more barbaric and blood-bathed extension of Jodie Foster’s “Nell”… a Nell from Hell if you will; The Woman seeks to cut its own path through the deep, dark woods. And while for all its changes and tweaks McKee still follows many of the same trails blazed by previous woodland creature features, his woman still manages to lurch forward with some unique performances and innovative moments.
This is horror connoisseur meat and potatoes to be sure as writer Jack Ketchum – most famous for his many horror novels (The Girl Next Door, Red, Offspring, The Lost) and for being dubbed “The Scariest Guy in America” by fellow nightmare novelist Stephen King – offers another disturbing tale to translate, joining the ranks of his other DVD leaps like the aforementioned four novels, most notably Offspring, as The Woman is a continuation of those events.
The extras are a grouping of standard fare, which would have been made just a bit better if either McKee or Ketchum were given their own spotlight segment. The Making-Of featurette is probably the best supplement, followed by a few deleted scenes, Spillane’s music track, and a puzzling inclusion about a boy and his burro. Mi Burro is a short film that has no evident tie in with the main feature film – aside from film editor Zach Passero producing it – but is nonetheless still fairly entertaining.
So though this gal may make horror buffs lament, this film is rife with unconscionably perverse content, so many mainstream viewers may indeed want to leave this little lady far out in the woods.
