DVD review: The Janky Promoters: A lackluster mockery of the music industry

The Janky Promoters is a modestly entertaining, jocular perspective on the shady world of music promoters. The film is a fairly amusing perspective on another urban story that highlights certain aspects of the over glamorized life in the hood. This film showcases one of the fastest growing genres in music, rap. The film stars Ice Cube (Lottery Ticket), Mike Epps (Jumping The Broom), Young Jezzy, Tamala Jones (35 & Ticking) and Juanita Jennings (Vacancy 2: the First Cut).

The Janky Promoters is a putrid cesspool for the overused, redundant stereotypes that plague Afro-American films. It’s a reasonably humorous farce which embellishes on the pathetic state of the modern movie making involving Hollywood’s obsession of glamorizing the hood life. It’s an under-publicized but still inspires a good level of humor. It’s the latest hood-centric project that reunites the tandem of Ice Cube and Mike Epps for more comedic hi jinks. The film premiered in 2009.

This lackluster mishap doesn’t have many facets that separate it from other urban stories. The main difference is the fact that this film one focuses on the music industry. The movie focuses more on the life of the promoters as it tries to inspire laughter. It has some smaller nuances attempts to add its own spin on a number of situation that would induce humor. The film is compiled with a number of amusing takes on multiple aspects of life such as the show Cheaters (called So Busted in the film)

The underachieving debacle has a number of scenes that implement a jocular approach to the world of rap music. It manages to incorporate multiple aspects about the rap game. From the women trying to get pregnant, the entourage, groupies, and some of the other outrageous aspects that surround concerts. It also features a number witty, time sensitive jokes

The comedic tandem of Mike Epps and Ice Cube have made for a good paring for success. The Janky Promoters is their fourth co-joining of their comedic talents. Ice Cube puts his entertaining touch on the film as the two fast-talking, shady con artists who attempt to bring a rap show to the small town of Modesto, California. Russell Redds (Ice Cube) and Jelly Roll (Epps). Epps shines the most out of the two as his character of Jelly Roll I easily the highlight of this misery. In addition, Russell Redds’s mother (Juanita Jennings) makes a brief but extremely funny appearance. Not many of the other cast do much to add to the enjoyment of this debacle.

The comedic combination of Ice Cube and Mike Epps can’t save this movie. It’s another one too many of the “hood films” that Ice Cube has had a string of successes with. This one is clearly the least entertaining films that the pair have done together. This one falls short as it doesn’t measure up to the prior ventures together. The film has some small flickers of entertainment but it doesn’t offer the sheer comedic enjoyment as their prior ventures.
