DVD review: Stone

Synopsis ~ Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro and Oscar® nominee Edward Norton deliver powerful performances as a seasoned corrections official and a scheming inmate whose lives become dangerously intertwined in this “gritty and engrossing thriller” (Steve O’Brien, WCBS-FM). Jack Mabry (De Niro), a parole officer days away from retirement, is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton), in prison for arson.
Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision with his wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich) have profound and unexpected effects on them both. This tale of passion, betrayal and corruption skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses, as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin.

Tapping into the same rocky textures as its main characters namesake, Stone is more adept in the hard, solitary interpretation of each individual character’s mind-set than with the ensemble as a whole, and though the film could have easily been written off as an exercise in attention-to-detail-gone-wild, the actors involved steadily overpower the awkwardness and bring what can only be interpreted as insightful intent on the filmmaker’s part to full-blown fruition.
Stone is definitely a film to be witnessed for its actors, because while Norton’s corny-rows are annoyingly distracting for all the wrong reasons – seriously, corn rows… what white actor has ever pulled this off… please stop -– the performances given by everyone involved are equally attracting for all the right ones.
Containing only a brief Making-Of Featurette made up mostly of interview and film scene footage, the extras lack the usual bit of lure that tempts most who would typically tune in, and though the Theatrical Trailer also accompanies its not nearly as inviting as a commentary would have been.
So if killer thrillers mixed with emotional blow-ups zoomed in close-up make your suspense gauges go up, then Stone is a delectable bite of brooding debauchery.
