DVD review: Resident Evil: Retribution: The worse in the franchise

Modern movies are generally made so that Hollywood can cash in on at least one sequel. In today’s movie industry, film makers seek the “tri-factor” when it comes to films meaning a successful trilogy of films. Trilogies are the current “in thing” when it comes to films.
Consequently, there are very few franchises modern movie franchise the have the level of success that the Resident Evil film franchise has. A very few franchises can claim the same success over the same tenure. Only the American Pie series, The Saw franchise, and maybe The Fast and Furious series of films match the success of the Resident Evil series. This franchise has had four successfully profitable films in 11 years and continues to press on. The fifth film in the series of films based upon the once popular Capcom game that originated in 1996. Four films, two animated films, a number of video games. Resident Evil is one of the most profitable game franchises ever. The film stars Mila Jovovich (The Three Musketeers), Michelle Rodriguez (Fast and Furious), Kevin Durand (Real Steel), Shawn Roberts (Resident Evil: Afterlife), Sienna Gullory (Resident Evil: Afterlife), and Boris Kudrow (Resident Evil: Afterlife). Directed by W.S. Anderson.
Resident Evil: Retribution is an unmitigated, hapless travesty that simply tries to cash in on the franchise name. This film is a poorest attempt to build on the story of Alice and her never ending conflict with the nefarious Umbrella corporation. As the series has progressed, each film has gotten worse by the sequel. This film is the worse one yet as it is disconnected and disjointed calamity that never really connects with the prior two. This film has nearly no story line and the little that it does have doesn’t hardly connect to the prior film. This film bludgeons is audience with more mind-numbing action. This is a great example of a franchise that has been completely exhausted. it’s a life draining dribble that spits in the face of any true fan of film.
There are very little positives that RE 5 offers its audience. One of it is the action that has become synonymous with the films is bigger and bolder. It’s truly the only reason to subject oneself to the horrid nature of this tragedy. However, most of the action sequences are sheer outlandishly absurd. The action is a plenty but too much of it teeters the brink of being ridiculous which completely takes robs the enjoyment of many of the scenes.
The film focuses too much on the action aspect of the series and gives no clear reason for it. This one truly embraces that fact that it was spurned by a video game. As it has nearly no story. Its just one action sequence after another, never giving the audience any sustenance.
Makes a clear and distinct attempt to connect this one to the other films. The scene from the first film that started the outbreak is embedded within this one. More zombies, more explosions, and more carnage make t
The first 20-30 minute are a waste and literally forces zest for the film into submission. The film opens with a quick montage to sum up some of the highs and lows of the series. Giving the audience of the recap of the story so far. The same video game like imagery comprises this one as in the other versions.
The second best aspect of this tumultrious disaster is that it returns nearly every actor that had a major role the films over the years. In addition to Mila Jovovich’s return, Michelle Rodriguez, Boris Kudrow,
Name Albert Wesker, Ada Wong, Jill Valentine, Luther West. Of course what would the Resident Evil films be without Mila Jovovich? Jovovich returns to the franchise that has made her a household name. She is one of the most recognizable female action stars in Hollywood and has clearly made her mark as Alice. She is impressive as ever in the action sequences of the film, however, the rest of the film is a step in the opposite direction as far as her acting ability. This is more the result of the lackluster story as opposed to her effort or skill.
Resident Evil: Retribution is a disappointment on a cataclysmic scale. The film is begrudgingly mundane and utterly senseless. It’s a listless debacle that rambles about as this story makes no sense. This is clearly just an attempt to make some money and capitalize on the devout following that the other films have built. This film however is the one that can shake that dedication. This catastrophe bludgeons the audience with action and then gives in no clear sustenance. It has less of a story than the games that its based. It would be better served as segmented internet series. Other than the a few elements and characters from the prior films, this one has no continuity. RE 5 does very little to make this one any better or different than the ones before. Its almost a new story. If you are in the mood for senseless action and the story has run its course and is clearly getting worse with each sequel. They are truly milking the franchise dry as they drag this story on and on.
