Bridesmaids debuted last year. It was one of those films that came out of no where and then took the movie industry by storm. And because of its success it has spurned a number of similar films in the same mold seeking to capitalize on the newfound affinity that movie lovers have found for the female dominated cast. The newest film attempting to steal Bridesmaids formula is Pitch Perfect. The films is geared towards a younger audience but it still implements that Bridesmaids formula to endear it to the masses. One of the more unique films to debut last year was a film about competitive college singing a capella competition.
Pitch Perfect is an entertaining intersection of comedy, music, and a tender coming of age story. It's a light hearted, spirited feel good story that successfully uses a pre-existing formula then applies it to the combination of musical and comedy to give a glimpse into the world of college musical competition. It is based on the book by Mickey Rapkin. It premiered in late 2012. The film stars Anna Kendrick (50/50), Skylar Astin (Wreck It Ralph), Anna Camp (The Help), Brittany Snow (Hairspray), Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids), John Michael Higgins (Fired Up), and Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games). With an appearance by Christopher Mintz (Fright Night 2011).
This uncanny anomaly that focuses on the A capella singing or
“organized nerd singing” as it is referred to in the film. The movie is made for a specific target audience as much of it will seem very teen focused. It revolves around a number of groups that compete annually in a number of competitions but leads up to the big showdown, Name. The group are The Bella’s (all female group), the Treble Makers (all Male group), B Harmonics, and The High Notes. But the real focus of the film is the fierce rivalry between the Bellas and The Treble Makers, both from Barden University. The Bella’s have stumbled and fallen short to the Treble Makers in a number of competitions where the Trebles have flourished.
Pitch Perfect serves a dual story. First, a heartfelt message about aspiring for one’s dreams. it’s a good story of determination and unwavering passion. Then a sweet love story that helps to progress the main story. The biggest asset is that it is a feel good film. The spirited tale with have you cheering with the rest of the audience. The Bellas’ aspiration to overcome adversity will have you right there clapping. The jocular approach to the film is what makes the story work.
The cast is well rounded. It is lead by Anna Kendrick who plays Beca, an aspiring DJ whose passion for music, outshines her desire for college. The real gem of the film is Rebel Wilson who portrays Fat Amy in a similar role to Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids). The role has become one of the more copied roles in the last couple of years but does a good job. She carries the bulk of the comedy. Her quick witted dialogue allows her to outshine her co-stars and own the film.
Perfect Pitch is a decent watch. It’s not unique in what it aspires to be but it does have good content that makes it a good family friendly film. Despite appearing to be a Bridesmaids rip off, Pitch Perfect has its own identity and is fairly entertaining. It really shows the universal appeal of film. It’s a good film to watch with the teens or younger members of the family. The film features some good comedy and the singing is great. The film finds that delicate balance between funny and serious. While its focused for a particular target audience, its more than entertaining enough to keep the kids and the adults content while watching. Not a great film but its more than enough to offset a boring night at home.
