Every so often a film comes along that grabs a hold of you and then completely takes you by surprise. There are so few films that actually exceed the expectation that the trailer sets the audience up for. More often then not, movie lovers fall prey to “trailer seduction” as the disappointment is soon to follow. However, every once in a while, a film comes out of no where and becomes one of the must see movies.
Deadfall is an intense, multifaceted happenstance that is comprised of intersecting storylines that converge then come to a culmination during an explosive climax. It’s a great thriller that features a great villainous performance. The story revolves around two siblings rob a casino and then are involved in an accident within a small town. After they’re forced to separate in order to escape they both start to discover themselves. The film stars Eric Bana (Star Trek 2009), Olivia Wilde (The Change Up), Kris Kristofferson (Dolphin Tale), Sissy Spacek (The Help), Treat Williams (127 Hours), Kate Mara (Ironclad), and Charlie Hunnam (The Ledge).
This taut, non-traditional whodunit reaps with great intensity from the opening moments. The story is very mesmerizing and immediately immerses the audience. With each passing minute, this multilayered thriller ratchets up the tension. The foundation of the story is the robbery and the escape that Addison and Lyza are attempting, however, It features a multitude of smaller storylines for each of the central characters that become involved with the duo. Each smaller story that enhances the enjoyment of the main story as it adds more tension to the main story.
The film is blessed with a great cast that is led by great performance by Eric Bana. This is easily one of Bana’s top films. In Deadfall, he stars as Addison and delivers a terrific villainous performance, one of his best since he starred in The Other Boelyn Girl. He’s ruthless, merciless, even bloodthirsty. Bana performance is at the root of the enjoyment of the movie. Olivia Wilde, Charlie Hunnam, and Kate Mara each give first rate performances.
Deadfall was so surprisingly good its sinful. I was overwhelmed by how much I enjoyed it. The film took me by surprise and exceeded all expectations for it. I have seen it three times since my initial viewing of it and it has gotten better each time. It’s easily one of the better films that I have seen in 2013. The story is great and the cast is terrific. Each member of the cast performs admirably. They blend very well. Bana is simply outstanding. I enjoyed him as Nero (Star Trek 2009) but he easily outdoes that performance. If you haven’t seen it by now then make it the next film that you check out. Its definitely worth every minute that you will spend watching. Great movie!
