The 80’s were a great decade for horror movies. A number of the horror genre’s greatest characters made their debut during that decade and have been slashing their way into the hearts of horror movie lovers ever since. One kill at a time, they each have been the proprietors of many nightmares on their path to becoming iconic. Many of them are now interwoven with the horror genre and helped to redefine it. From Jason Voorhees to Freddy Kruger, each of these great horror icons has gotten a 21st century facelift. Charles Lee Ray AKA Chucky is the latest to receive is 21st century updating. Chucky is back for more blood, carnage, and murderous mayhem.
The Curse of Chucky is the entertaining, creepy occurrence that returns one of horror’s great stars to the screen. It’s a good story that delves deeper into the back story that lead the deranged killer to becoming favorite deranged doll. “Curse” is a direct to video feature that becomes the sixth addition to the long tenured franchise. The movie stars Brad Dourif (The Chucky movies 1-6), Fiona Dourif (The Master), Danielle Bisutti (Insidious: Chapter 2), Summer Howell (The Last Druid: Garm Wars), and Brennan Elliot (Double Jeopardy).
Chucky returns to terrorize another family. Charles (Chucky) Lee Ray has been slashing his way into the hearts of horror movie lovers since 1988. In this sixth addition, he returns to terrorize a mother and her handicapped daughter. Chucky however has a hidden motive for his death dealing this time.
It’s a great compliment to the other Child’s Play films as this one incorporates a number of aspects that connect it to the other parts of the franchise. The Curse of Chucky returns the character to more of his traditional ways. “Curse” is one is more conventional and a lot of fun. The story arc is great as well. Curse of Chucky’s story is directly connected with the original film. It gives some key elements that have not been introduced in the series to date. Longtime fans of the series will really enjoy this one as the franchise comes full circle. It’s not big on thrills or chills but it does have a good level of enjoyment throughout. The real treat of the film is how it connects to the original.
Brad Dourif to the role of his classic character, In addition to lending his voice talents, Douriff makes an on screen appearance for the first time in since the first Child’s Play film. Douriff role as the deranged doll is as good as ever. He’s easily jumps right back and never seems to lose what has become the defining role of his career. Jennifer Tilly makes a surprise cameo as returns as Tiffany. Fiona Douriff makes her debut in the series as the Nica. She does an very good job as the focus of the film playing off of Brad Douriff. Her role as the handicapped protagonist of the movie is one of the best to oppose Chucky.
The Curse of Chucky is easily more enjoyable and easily fifty times better than the last two movies in the franchise. It’s not the zany over the top film like the last two incarnations, so “Curse” will really appeal more to the fans of the franchise since it has the same look and feel as the first two, which makes this one more of a “True Child’s Play” film than the ridiculous approach that Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky had. “Curse” truly shows why we love Chucky.
