One of my favorite series on network television gets to see it’s DVD release August 30th, with CougarTown: The Complete Second Season. In Season Two, the show really finds it’s stride and realizes once and for all, what the show was and will be. Which for someone who found Season 1 to be a bit hit or miss, the first half miss and the latter half hit, Season 2 was not only consistent, but it was just what the doctor ordered.
No longer is the show about Cox’s Jules Cobb chasing down hot young single guys, she is now in a serious and committed relationship with Grayson. And for the most part, all they do is hang out, like a little family, (or as they call themselves, a cul-de-sac crew) drink wine and go on adventures.
And then there is the cast. The cast in particular to CougarTown are all top notch. Cox, although her character is funny at times, mostly is playing it straight and setting up everyone else in the cul-de-sac crew, which has to be hard work, but she makes it seem effortless. Dan Byrd also gives a wonderful performance as Travis, Jules’ son, who is going off to college to find himself, and more importantly, work out this whole ‘love’ business, with some possibly depressing results. There is the wonderful Busy Philipps, who I believe won a critics’ choice award (and rightfully so!) for her role on the show. Josh Hopkins is fantastic, but for me, the real stand-outs are Christa Miller, and Brian Van Holt who as Ellie Torres and Bobby Cobb respectively have the toughest roles in the show. They are typically considered the go-to lightning rod for one-liners and jokes, but they also have to portray their roles with a nuance that a lot of great side-characters don’t always feature. (and btw, Ellie’s husband Ian Gomez? Nuff said on how awesome he is.)
Creators Kevin Biegel and Bill Lawrence have found their way into a heartwarming show with wonderful belly laughs, which is surprising considering you’re really watching a show about damaged people drinking wine trying to find a common ground in their lives. While the title may not be the best title for the show now, it still remains one of the best quality comedies on television.
In terms of the DVD release itself, the extras are ‘okay’. As a fan of scrubs dvds, some commentaries would have been interesting, especially considering how much crap the show has received for the title alone, and the differences between seasons. Or even talking about how Bill or Kevin really utilized twitter to help promote the show. While the DVD extras do include the “Andy’s Dreams” segments that were done for ABC dot com, outtakes and delete scenes, again, a bit more indepth stuff behind the scenes is always appreciated, especially when the guys behind the show have shown their fans that they can make the extras equally as impressive as the show itself. From general knowledge it is to point out this is neither Bill nor Kevin's fault, but perhaps something behind withheld down the line, so don't jump to conclusions on this.
The show CougarTown, (not extras) are featured in Dolby Digital, Spanish and French subtitles, and is presented in Widescreen (1:78-1) – Enhanced for 16x9 HD.
