DVD review: “Aroused” is equally poignant and probing

DVD review: Aroused

Studio Synopsis: Get up close and personal with 16 of the most successful women in the adult film industry as they shed their clothes for an intimate photo shoot with director Deborah Anderson. As questions are asked, personal stories about their lives are revealed, from why they chose the business of sex to how they got into it in the first place. These porn stars have always been discreet about their private lives in the past, yet Anderson has a way of opening up a dialog allowing them to share more than just their naked skin on screen. Their true inner vulnerability is touching, yet the characters they have created are confident and intoxicating. Once you hear their stories, you'll never look at them in the same way again. The film stars Alexis Texas, Allie Haze, April O’Neil, Ash Hollywood, Asphyxia, Belladonna, Brooklyn Lee, Francesca Le, Jesse Jane, Katsuni, Kayden Kross, Lexi Belle, Lisa Ann, Misty Stone, Tanya Tate and Teagan Presley.

One has to wonder every time a documentary like “Aroused” goes probing the depths of the porn industry, just who these films are for. If you talk to most women, they’ll likely shun anything having to do with the assumed depraved and degrading industry, and I’m pretty sure any man tuning in is probably doing so for an entirely different reason, disinterested in having his fantasy bubble blown by adding poignancy to his “play dates.”

And while the first half of the film’s more than appropriate 69 minutes is filled with a sobering amount of heartfelt testimony, the film’s back end – much like any innuendo you choose to use here – leaves little doubt as to why each and every one of these women always ends up on top. If you’re actually one of the few fans who are interested in substance over sexiness, the doc does offer a well informed, well executed approach.

But much like a food documentary that takes you through the motions of illustrating how your burger was once a bovine, one has to wonder if altering the sensibilities and tastes of a target audience is indeed a wise decision.

Unfortunately no extras menu is given to this title, which is strange given the subject matter, but remains unaffected by the loss. So with an intermittent message of women’s empowerment, but an undercurrent that may make its audience quickly go limp, “Aroused” is both poignant and provocative…a pairing which may or may not be a good thing.
