Containing more conspiracy musings than a Wall Street waiter, Anonymous is a terrifically twisted bit of history that’s dressed to the nines in opulent refinement and performed brilliantly with that unmistakable Shakespearean flare.
And while everyone involved seemed to revel in the wonderful fun of the fictional page, the film staggers and sputters with sporadic legitimization which not only tends to eventually become tiresome, but also clips the CliffsNotes crowd from the fun altogether, leaving only those well versed fans that will; more than likely, dismiss most of the debate as fruitless fantasy anyway.
A modest offering of extras is included, with a thoroughly enjoyable commentary by Emmerich and Orloff dealing with every aspect of production, from costume choices and over-the-top voices to the skewing of the film’s historical elements.
The feature “Who is the real Shakespeare” however is the most intriguing extra, as the filmmakers delve into the evidence that supports the films shocking claims. And, as always, a few Deleted Scenes close the curtain on the festivities.
So although Anonymous is lavishly upholstered and cunningly bolstered; in the end, its strengths and weaknesses with audiences remain “To be… or not to be…” seen.
