Dunkin' Donuts is the reason why native Californians find east coasters strange when they become frantic, crazy, mad people when you utter the word "Dunkin'". They speak of Dunkin' Donuts as if it was the second coming of Christ. As if it was Gandalf. The eyes moisten up with slowly forming tears, the mouth waters, and a low hum of excitement exits from their mouths while Californians look with bewilderment. Luckily, located in Barstow (of all places), a Dunkin' Donuts has landed in California to help the natives comprehend the excitement the east coast has known for a while.
Unless you live in Barstow or continually travel down the 15 to go back and forth from Southern California to Las Vegas, you would never visit this location. Even if you did, you would have to fight hoards of people stopping at this pit stop area at all times of the day to even reach the tiny location. Still, the small corner they do occupy (opposite a Panda Express, gift shops, and McDonald's) is filled with bright lights, colorful displays of their scrumptious donuts, and a menu on flat screen TVs that display high definition ads of their food. So although the location is awful, the presentation is great.
Though not the most amazing donuts you'll ever eat in your life, it does put to shame almost all other chain donut shops out there. The donuts are flavorful and sweet, while the hash browns are herby and packed with flavor. Their sandwiches are hearty and are a good buy for the buck, especially considering the alternatives around you. Now the coffee...
The coffee served at Dunkin' Donuts is the complete opposite of Starbucks. If there is such a thing as American coffee, Dunkin' Donuts would fit under that bill. Their coffee is creamy and sweet. It's not necessarily sweet like a Starbucks' Frappaccino, but instead, like a simple, satisfying coffee. It's hard to describe because there isn't much out in California to compare. Think of getting really good coffee from a gourmet coffee shop. Put in a good helping of half and half and some pure cane sugar and that's the coffee you get at Dunkin' Donuts. Nothing fancy, nothing crazy. The goodness comes from the simplicity and it's a flavor you might just welcome after a long day of traveling and fast food nonsense along the way. Pair it with their delicious sandwich or donut and you've got a winning pair.
Dunkin' Donuts is a great alternative to all the other chain donut shops and coffee shops out there. The greatness found here is the simplicity of it all. Nothing too complicated to get in the way of pure enjoyment. With that being said, it'll be quite the trek to get here because of its location. Although an oasis for weary travelers, this locations is more than inconvenient for anyone who doesn't live within the area. So, if you ever feel a deep need for Dunkin' Donuts, you know where it's at. Whether or not the drive is worth it depends on you.
