If you liked "Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014," then you'll enjoy the expansion just as much. Making it's debut on September 18th on PC via Steam, players can expect more cards, more challenges, more trophies, and more "Magic: The Gathering" goodness.
About the expansion
After suffering too many defeats, she has observed too much darkness in the world. Once you've battled her and proved your worth, you join her on a quest to seek out the council of the gods to suppress the darkness. There is a magical spell that she can cast, but in order to do so, she will need the blood of a demon and the scale of a white dragon. Along your journey, you revisit the world of Alara, then venture back to Ravnica, and reach your final destination, Kamigawa.
The good of the game
While "Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014" may look the same, there is quite a bit of content that has been added. This provides for a high replay value. Even this writer hasn't unlocked everything.
Some of the decks you can expect to unlock include:
- Lords of Darkness
- Dack Fayden - a fun red and blue deck which plays cards like "Wee Dragonauts" and spells to pump it up
- Elspeth - a Bant colored, exalted themed deck
- Nissa Revane
- and more!
Challenges are back and with a fury. If you remember, within the core game, there are novice challenges and advance challenges. In the expansion, they are simply known as expansion challenges, however, they seem more advanced with much more complicated puzzles. They require quite a bit of work, but you'll feel very rewarded in the end. One of the new challenges involves doing 65 points of damage with "Tendrils of Agony."
The ugly parts of the game
As an expansion, there is little to complain about. In the fact, the only thing that can be said is that it's not right on the opening screen. In fact, it was initially uncertain if it had even been installed. Only after navigating to the Single Player menu was the expansion discovered. It was a little confusing.

The expansion for "Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014" is an excellent addition to the game and does exactly what it's supposed to do: expand on the core gaming elements. It's clear cut, and straight to the point. The expansion is not too small to the point you ask yourself, "Why didn't this come as a patch?" and it's not too large where you have to create a whole new game out of it. As Goldilocks would say, "This one is just right."
The expansion for "Duels of the Planeswalkers 2014" out right now for PC via Steam. It can be downloaded for the low price of $4.99.
