Downtown Disney Rainforest Café engages you in a dining adventure

Downtown Disney Rainforest Café, Disneyland Resort, Anaheim California

Last week Dorothy and I chose to spend the day at the Disneyland Resort to celebrate her birthday. For dinner, thanks to a $25 birthday gift certificate from Landry’s Select, we knew we were going to go to one of their restaurants as they have several in Southern California that we really enjoy. The Rainforest Café won as there is one in Downtown Disney so we merely walked over from Disneyland then walked back to Disney California Adventure after dinner.

The Rainforest Café is one of the Disneyland Resort’s themed restaurants. Being Landry's Select Club members, we got priority seating so only had to wait 10 minutes. If you’ve never been to a Rainforest Café, you owe it to yourself to experience a dining adventure there at least once. Your inner child will love it. It’s obviously a family restaurant. I love watching the colorful tropical fish in their aquarium wall entry and the huge aquarium on the second floor.

Coca-Cola, $3.79, and Fresh Brewed Iced Tea, #3.79

We were seated on the second floor where we could see the elephants and gorillas hanging out in the jungle that surrounded the dining area. Then our safari guide (waiter) came to give us our menus and take our drink orders. Dorothy ordered a Coke and I got my fresh brewed iced tea. Their menu makes even a hamburger sound exotic and adventurous.

Macadamia Crusted Tilapia & Coconut Shrimp, $25.49

It was our night for seafood as we both ordered seafood dishes. Dorothy chose the Macadamia Crusted Tilapia & Coconut Shrimp which was accompanied by “dirty rice,” a tangy teriyaki glaze, which had a barbecue flavor, and mango purée. William brought her a small plastic dish of the Rainforest Café’s balsamic vinaigrette. Dorothy said it made a tasty sauce for her rice.

The Macadamia Crusted Tilapia had a wonder flavor due to the crunchy, delicious macadamia crust. The Coconut Shrimp came cooked on skewers. They were nice, firm jumbo shrimp, thoroughly cooked. The coconut slivers coating them were toasted so each shrimp presented a delicious, lightly sweet and crunchy experience.

Taste of the Islands (Coconut Shrimp, Blackened Tilapia topped with a mango salsa and Dynamite Scallops and Shrimp), $27.99

This dish included three seafood items: Coconut Shrimp, Blackened Tilapia topped with a mango salsa and Dynamite Scallops and Shrimp. Although I normally consider tilapia a boring fish as I find it soft and bland, the blackened serving was more flavorful. I got the vegetables instead of rice. They consisted of snap peas, zucchini, yellow and green peppers. I also got a small topping of mango purée

Like Dorothy, I loved my four Coconut Shrimp. I also enjoyed dipping them into the tangy teriyaki glaze that came on the side.

The centerpiece of the plate for me was the Dynamite Scallops and Shrimp. Usually I substitute any cream or cheese dish because most dairy products cause congestion in my system. This time I went with it as shown on the menu. And am I glad I did! This was a fabulous dish! The shrimp were the size of the scallops. Both were cooked until firm yet tender. Rainforest Café served them in a creamy cheese sauce that formed a thin crust on top from cooking in the oven.

Birthday Cupcake

William and a couple other servers brought Dorothy a white cake cupcake with whipped cream icing and raspberry swirl to decorate the plate. It was a sweet touch, much appreciated. That was the only dessert we shared as we were returning to Disney California Adventure and wanted to avoid feeling stuffed.

The Downtown Disney Rainforest Café lived up to our past experiences and our expectations for this chain. We enjoyed a sense of adventure while dining on delicious dishes. And our adventure guide, William, provided exceptional service. We rate this dinner five stars.
