'Down and Dangerous' is the Dumb Starbucks version of crime action thrillers

Down and Dangerous

By now everybody and their grandma has heard about Nathan Fielder of the Comedy Central show "Nathan For You" opening up a parody coffeehouse aptly named Dumb Starbucks in Los Feliz, California.

The word dumb also fits perfectly with the crime action thriller "Down and Dangerous" from director Zak Forsman, whose movie seems to borrow character types and story elements right out of director Michael Mann's 2006 movie version of "Miami Vice" and Mark Wahlberg's 2012 movie "Contraband" about a drug smuggler.

In fact, "Dumb and Dangerous" might be a more suitable title for this low-budget unintentional parody of the aforementioned Michael Mann and Mark Wahlberg movies.

From the moody Michael Mann-esque cinematography to the poorly written and badly acted scenes with almost identical-looking leading men who never seem to shave and skinny like a model leading ladies, "Down and Dangerous" comes across as a cheesy, low-rent "Miami Vice" knockoff.

It may as well be titled "Malibu Vice" or "Mexico Vice" because that's where most of the story takes place.

As for action, the film offers up several forgettable fight sequences and shootouts along with a low-budget foot chase shot at the Olvera Street Marketplace in Downtown Los Angeles.

What's worse is that the "Down and Dangerous" trailer looks slick but the actual film doesn't deliver the goods with its yawn inducing climactic showdown.

However, I do applaud the filmmakers for making this movie on a crowd-funded budget of just over $38,000, which according to their Kickstarter page went primarily "toward paying the cast a fair rate, necessary costs of production like food and location fees, and toward fun stuff like fake prop guns, knives, breakaway glass, fake blood, costumes and more." And kudos to the producers for getting Judd Nelson (Yes, the same Judd Nelson from "St. Elmo's Fire" and "The Breakfast Club") to play a brief supporting role.

But ultimately, "Down and Dangerous" has the feel of a bad late night cable movie.

"Down and Dangerous" will be released in theaters and VOD this Friday, February 14, 2014.
